CITY POP 🔥😮‍💨🔥

MAN OH MAN….I’ve been jamming to this bouquet of City Pop gems and can’t stop having the mellow funk face the entire time.

For those who may not be familiar with the sound, City Pop is a loose category of Japanese pop music that emerged in the late 1970s and peaked in the 1980s.

Think Hall & Oates but even smoother and with cooler clothing.

And no yachts.

And the most subtle first sprinklings of electronic drum sounds thrown in the mix.

Peep this playlist and let me know if you’re digging it like I am!

LITTLE WINS

Some days the wins don’t come, man. Or they ARE there but you just can’t see them at a quick glance like when the Amazon delivery driver doesn’t bless your front porch like they normally do.

But lo and behold you go check the back porch or your neighbor’s front door and BAM there it is! Today’s win might not be where you WANTED it to be, but if you assess the rest of your day and look a little harder you’ll eventually find it.

Finding your happiness is a full-time job, man. But just like a job, some days are easy and some days are less easy.

And speaking of a job, remember that a job should hold zero percent of your Happiness Pie Chart. Because as much as you bring your sharp mind to your grind, there are still a whole lot of other people involved in turning that ball of dough that you pass them into a successful pizza.

Translation: THAT’S A PRECARIOUS PATH TO HAPPINESS

If you’re letting your happiness sit in job-related victories, then that piece of your Happiness Pie Chart is not solely the result of your own doing. It only lights up dependent on whether or not all those other people in the mix either cooperate beautifully or inadvertently stop the water from flowing down the river.

Keep that Happiness Pie Chart clean and in YOUR hands, my G. Go outside. Go down to the beach. Go drive “The Loop”. Put in some hours on the Nintendo Switch. Drink more water.

(this train of thought post was inspired by my little sister Lo sending me a text out of the blue just to check in and see what’s happening ❤️)

FIVE THREE FIVE THREE VOL. 1

Five Three Five Three is a series of playlists built with the intention of putting you in a specific place with a specific face at a specific space in time.

VOLUME 1

This first volume of the Five Three Five Three series is comprised of my absolute favorite G-Funk gems from my young flattop days right up until I started college in the Fall of 2001.

This is also the soundtrack of pre-owning-my-own-car life. I was either enjoying these jams on my headphones, on my Panasonic SA-AK24 Compact Bookshelf Stereo System, or on a borrowed car mission in my dad’s almost-primer-black 1989 Jeep Cherokee via the Radio Shack cassette deck adapter that was connected to my Panasonic SL-S361C portable CD player.

Thanks to the magic of Spotify, I listen to this volume on repeat in the crib almost daily (and loudly) on our Sonos home system and never get tired of it.

A whole lotta heat within. I hope you dig it.
